IPL THERAPY & SKIN REJUVENATION

London Dermatology | 25 October 2024

Heat and a wide spectrum of light are used in Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) to enhance the elasticity, tone, and texture of the skin. IPL has the potential to renew the skin in a variety of ways and is unlikely to cause superficial skin damage, so there is no downtime. Thread veins, dark pigmentation, acne, rosacea, melasma, papules, and cysts are among the “chromophores”—specific skin structures—that the light targets. The device’s heat promotes the formation of collagen, clears the pores, and guards against free radical damage, all of which can cause ageing.

Because each IPL treatment builds on the outcomes of the prior one, resulting in longer lasting effects and preventing recurrence of the initial condition, most skin disorders require three to six sessions. Since skin cell regeneration happens every 28 days, the skin heals in around 4 weeks between treatments. After the treatment, you could feel a bit red and a little stung, but there is no downtime. After IPL treatment, many lesions, including veins and black patches, may appear darker, although this goes away in three to five days. A few days following treatment, some lesions, including melasma or thread veins, may crust or peel; however, this is common and not cause for concern.

Anti-Ageing

According to one research, wrinkles were reduced by 24% after three IPL sessions and by 33% after five (1). Another experiment revealed that skin tightening and visible pores had improved by 25% after five sessions. IPL is most frequently used at Devonshire Dermatology to tighten the backs of the arms, tummies, and jawlines. In between sessions, using the right skincare products in conjunction with the IPL significantly enhances outcomes.

Pigmentation & Melasma

This kind of discolouration has generally been difficult to cure, yet the IPL produces fantastic results. Over the course of a few weeks, the targeted dark patches are destroyed by the device’s heat and light absorption. According to trials, after five sessions, customers’ pigmentation is likely to improve by 25%. To further improve outcomes, IPL is frequently used with a course of peels and skincare treatments in between sessions.

Thread Veins & Rosacea

Over time, thread veins may develop on the skin’s surface as a result of pressure, skin type, or genetic reasons. Rosacea is characterised by a distinctive flush or redness of the skin, mainly on the nose and cheeks, caused by dilated veins under the skin’s surface. According to studies, one IPL session can somewhat reduce thread veins and skin flushing, while three to six sessions offer the best long-term vein clearing.

Acne

In the UK, this is a prevalent ailment that can range in severity from moderate to severe, and it can be quite distressing for people who are impacted. Two IPL treatments resulted in a 41% decrease in acne lesions, while five IPL sessions decreased inflammation and lesions by 91%, according to one study. IPL may tighten skin and treat a variety of skin issues on any area of the body, including the arms, back, stomach, thighs, face, and neck.
