SCLEROTHERAPY : GETTING RID OF SPIDER VEINS

London Dermatology | 27 November 2024

Fifty to fifty-five percent of women and forty to forty-five percent of males have spider veins. In actuality, almost 50% of men and women over 50 suffer from varicose veins. However, they can appear in women as early as adolescence.

Although they are usually painless and innocuous, some people find them humiliating and difficult to conceal.

What Causes Spider Veins?

Heredity: A family history of varicose and spider veins increases the likelihood that they will develop.

Medical Conditions: Weak or poorly functioning veins are likelier to become spider or varicose veins.

Age: With increasing age, veins typically don’t function as well.

Hormonal Changes: Many women develop spider veins during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause.

Pregnancy: During pregnancy, the increase of blood volume is particularly likely to cause spider or varicose veins.

Weight: Being overweight or obese increases the risk of varicose veins.

Being Sedentary: Sitting or standing in the same position for prolonged periods could put pressure on veins to work harder.

Sun Exposure: Too much UV exposure could increase the risk of facial spider veins for fair-skinned people.

How To Treat Spider Veins

Vascular Laser

Spider veins usually respond best to this technique. By targeting the vein with a laser and subjecting it to short but strong heat, the dermatologist kills the vein and permits the tissue to be reabsorbed into the body. For optimal results, patients should schedule one to three sessions of treatment, which last around 20 minutes each. Following treatment, patients can resume their regular activities, with the exception of exercising for 24 hours.

Sclerotherapy

Our dermatologist injects a sclerosing substance, often liquid but occasionally foam, into the afflicted vein using a fine-tipped needle. The vein shrinks and collapses as a result of the solution. Patients can resume their regular activities right away after spending around 20 minutes in the office. For optimal effects, they should stay out of the sun for a few weeks and use compression stockings following.
